TALSKHOP – Angielski w biznesie Odcinek 117: The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Don’t look over your neighbours fence and go, „Ooh he’s got a better car. Ooh he’s got a more attractive wife.”

The Office – Motivation [S02E04]

Hi there, it’s Karolina from ASAP Speak&Play!

Do you sometimes imagine that living in a different country would be better than in Poland? Or maybe that other people have better things or better job than you?

Well, today we are going to learn and think about an interesting saying in English that is very common, maybe not directly related to business , more to life itself: „The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”. The fence is what you put around a house and garden – ogrodzenie, płot, the fence.

So, what does it really mean? Well, every day on social media you can see happy people with lots of good stuff, travelling, doing great things you wish you could do. Maybe you think: wow they have a far better life than mine. I wish I had such a life!

But then when you meet any of these people you find out that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence, and the reality is different than you thought. And maybe your life is as good as theirs, or maybe there are things you can be grateful for – być wdzięcznym – be grateful for.

The idiom „the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” means that we often envy – zazdrościmy – we often envy things people have, we think that their life is better than ours and we don’t appreciate what we have – nie doceniamy tego co mamy – we don’t appreciate what we have.

We can use this phrase in short: „the grass is always greener” in the context when somebody complains – narzeka – complains. Or even „the grass is always greener on the other side” and people will still understand the meaning you want to convey.

So let’s practise. Listen and repeat.
