Dziś zajmiemy się czymś, co z pewnością zainteresuje każdego, kto chce lepiej zrozumieć świat biznesu i finansów. Będziemy mówić o trzech kluczowych pojęciach: „shareholder”, „stockholder” i „stakeholder”.

Why do we need to know these words? Because they are big in the business world, but people often mix them up or think they mean the same thing. It’s really important to know what each word means and how companies and organizations function.

Let’s go.

Shareholder vs Stockholder

A shareholder and a stockholder mean the same – znaczą to samo – they mean the same, to udziałowiec, akcjonariusz lub wspólnik. The only difference between them is that a shareholder is a British term, a stockholder is an American term.

Shares or stocks to akcje. So shareholders or stockholders are investors, people who hold the shares or stocks.

The place where we buy and sell shares or stocks is called the stock market – Giełda Papierów Wartościowych – stock market.

If you have more than 50 % of shares in a company you are a majority or major shareholder – akcjonariusz, wspólnik lub udziałowiec większościowy – a majority shareholder or major shareholder. 

If you have less than 50% of shares, you are a minority shareholder – akcjonariusz, wspólnik lub udziałowiec mniejszościowy.

And if the company wants to invite their shareholders, they organise a shareholders’ meeting. We can also say „a shareholder meeting”, without -s. That’s fine.

Stakeholder 

Stakeholders czyli interesariusze to wszyscy, którzy w jakiś sposób są związani z działalnością firmy albo projektem i mogą być przez nie pozytywnie lub negatywnie dotknięci.

Stakeholders of a company could be its employees, clients, suppliers, owners, investors and neighbours. 

In a project, the stakeholders are the team members, clients, management, suppliers, government etc.

For example, if a company wants to build a new factory, people living nearby can be stakeholders. If the company pollutes – zanieczyszcza – pollutes the river nearby, they feel the consequences. Also, employees of the company are stakeholders too, because their jobs and money they earn depend on how well the company does.

Co ciekawe. Ten termin jest często mylony z pozostałymi stockholder i shareholder. Choć w obecnych czasach jest coraz bardziej popularny i można go często usłyszeć. W poszukiwaniu przykładów zauważyłam, że termin ten jest źle używany nawet w filmach! Nie można powiedzieć, że ktoś jest „majority stakeholder”, bo to słowo nie odnosi się do akcjonariuszy, jak już wiemy, tylko do interesariuszy, czyli jest to znacznie szerszy zakres osób zainteresowanych . 

So if you are in a meeting about project’s stakeholders you may say something like:

Zidentyfikujmy kluczowych interesariuszy tego projektu.

Let’s identify the key stakeholders for this project.

Jak możemy lepiej włączyć naszych interesariuszy w proces decyzyjny?

How can we better involve our stakeholders in the decision-making process?

Ważne jest, aby regularnie informować naszych interesariuszy o postępie projektu.

It’s important to regularly update our stakeholders on the project’s progress.
